Syncopation
2026 – ZineSyncopation: The Crowdsourced Manual is a 52-page zine constructed entirely from curated and redesigned Wikipedia pages. The work examines how knowledge of the rave, including its music, rituals, and unwritten codes, is no longer passed down solely through direct experience. Instead, it is assembled collectively through digital archives, online forums, and crowd-authored documentation.
The title borrows from the musical term for an off-beat rhythm, specifically the accent that lands where you don’t expect it. The project applies this terminology as a metaphor for the rave experience itself, framing the dance floor as a place where a sensation is felt instinctively. Yet is ultimately defined, archived, and authored by the subculture that surrounds it. Moving through seven chapters, the zine traces the rave as a self-perpetuating system, where decentralized knowledge shapes lived experience, and lived experience feeds back into the archive.
